Anthropic Skills - The Official Agent Skills Collection for Claude

The anthropics/skills repository is Anthropic’s own collection of Agent Skills for Claude, described in its README simply as a “Public repository for Agent Skills.” It is worth understanding what kind of artefact that is, because it is easy to mistake it for a library you depend on. It is a reference collection and a specification, published so developers can see how the mechanism works.

The README defines the mechanism concisely: “Skills are folders of instructions, scripts, and resources that Claude loads dynamically to improve performance on specialized tasks.”

The format is the part worth learning

The most reusable thing in the repository is not any individual skill but the shape they all share. Each one is “self-contained in its own folder with a SKILL.md file containing the instructions and metadata that Claude uses,” and the frontmatter requires only two fields — name (lowercase, hyphens for spaces) and description:

---
name: my-skill-name
description: A clear description of what this skill does and when to use it
---

# My Skill Name

[Instructions Claude follows when this skill is active]

That is the entire contract. Everything else in a skill folder — scripts, reference documents, templates — is optional supporting material. The repository also ships a spec/ directory with the Agent Skills specification and a template/ folder to start from, which together make it the authoritative reference for anyone writing skills rather than consuming them.

What is actually in it

The skills/ directory groups examples into Creative & Design, Development & Technical, Enterprise & Communication, and Document Skills. The document skills — docx, pdf, pptx and xlsx — are the notable ones, because they are the implementations behind Claude’s own document handling.

Installation into Claude Code goes through the plugin marketplace:

/plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills
/plugin install document-skills@anthropic-agent-skills
/plugin install example-skills@anthropic-agent-skills

A skill is then invoked by referring to it in a request, for example: “Use the PDF skill to extract the form fields from path/to/some-file.pdf”. On Claude.ai, the README states the example skills “are all already available to paid plans,” and the API route supports both pre-built and uploaded custom skills.

Two caveats that change how you should use it

The licence is not uniform. The README says “Many skills in this repo are open source (Apache 2.0)” — but the document skills are explicitly carved out: “These are source-available, not open source, but we wanted to share these with developers as a reference.” If you intend to ship something derived from docx or xlsx, that distinction decides whether you can. Check the terms per skill rather than assuming the repository has one licence.

They are demonstrations, not a supported dependency. The README is unusually direct about this: “These skills are provided for demonstration and educational purposes only. While some of these capabilities may be available in Claude, the implementations and behaviors you receive from Claude may differ from what is shown in these skills.” It closes with the obvious consequence — “Always test skills thoroughly in your own environment before relying on them for critical tasks.”

Read together, those two notes tell you the intended use: study the patterns, copy what fits, and own the result. Treating this repository as a pinned dependency for production behaviour is working against its stated purpose.

Where it fits

If you are writing your own skills, this is the first place to look — the spec and template are here, and reading a mature example like the document skills teaches more about structuring instructions than the spec does on its own. If you simply want working capabilities inside Claude Code, the plugin install is a one-liner and the example skills cover a useful spread.

What it is not is a curated marketplace. Community directories exist for breadth; this repository’s value is that it is the reference implementation by the people who defined the format.
